Your emotional control panel

Everyone should work on having more personal freedom in their lives. When I talk about personal freedom I mean the ability to create and surround yourself with the emotions and influences that you choose. You can greatly improve your life this way.

NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic-Programming, is a method you can use to give yourself this ability. This will allow you to start analyzing how your emotions and thoughts affect you at any given time. You can only bring about change in yourself if you understand why you act the way you do right now.

Generally you think in terms that are encompassed by your senses. You experience things in your mind by picturing, hearing, smelling, feeling, and even tasting them. While you aren’t actually doing any of these things, you can make them seem very real, and this can be used to your advantage. By taking unappealing sensations that are making you unhappy, and replacing them with happy sensations, you can change your whole outlook on life.

As you use methods such as NLP, they will feel more and more natural to you. You will have to put less effort into maintaining a positive state of mind. But when you are first starting to use it, having a few steps you can go through to improve your state of mind can help you see results faster.

Here is my ‘Feeling Better’ Step-By-Step Method:

1. Find a favorite memory of when you felt really, really good. This is your “base.” If you get off track, return to this base as needed.

2. Go through that memory, doing your best to remember every detail vividly. Recreate the feeling by imagining how things looked, the smells, and what you were hearing right then. Also, try to resume the position you were in when this good memory was created.

3. Feel the good emotions again, and really focus on making those feelings stronger until they fill your entire being. Try to notice if there is anywhere you start feeling those good sensations first, such as in your chest, spine, or head. This can help you recreate the feelings again in the future.

4. Now focus your thoughts on the future and project all the good feelings you have into an image of feeling good at a point in the future.

Getting good at these steps will take time, but each time you go through them it will get easier. This method will not only help you to feel good now, it also conditions your mind and gives you a more positive outlook on life. You are essentially showing yourself that the future can and will be a good place.

    #1 really hits home with me. I call it my “special place.” I was four or five and it was right before Christmas. We’d just pulled the decorations out of the attic and the house had the dusty smell of old paper. I snuck outside into the cold to wait for my daddy to come home and was standing under a faux-Victorian street corner light we had in our front yard. Soon he pulled into the driveway, got out of the car, and scooped me up into his arms. Whenever I feel stressed and down, I go back to that special place.

    Hey, I remember something similar to this from my psych class in college. There’s a visual exercise for people who suffer from bipolar disorder. People visualize a ‘safe place’ then go there when situations start getting out of hand.
